In the case above, sure they will learn of the death when transferring miles.. but for someone who only had the status through a companion link, I’d probably not notify till at least the following year, then request a courtesy soft landing?
I'm not sure what the justification is for a soft landing. The companion had all the opportunities with promos to get status on their own - and the companion designation is for the member who earned the lifetime status to gift to someone for a defined time limit.
