Not how it works -- the link stays in place until replaced by a new companion appointment (and that change occurs in January).
But the companion status is linked realtime to the elite's status, whatever changes are reflected immediately -- and if the account is closed that might impact the linked status.
One might hope for if not expect some sort of “soft landing” for the status to be pulled. In the case above, sure they will learn of the death when transferring miles.. but for someone who only had the status through a companion link, I’d probably not notify till at least the following year, then request a courtesy soft landing?
