I feel your pain. I've had to call on much more straightforward issues and they were both clueless and helpless. They have to have the worst customer service departments I have ever dealt with.
The way you describe it, you may need to cut your losses and start with a new account. The time and frustration it is causing has a cost too.

Yeah, you are right. It sort of became a matter of principle for me as I hate to see incompetences win, so to speak. I will probably go the new account route as I will need to fill up in another week.
