The catering in CE seems to depend somewhat on the origin - every time I've flown from LGW, though, despite the slightly smaller Avros in use, I've had a much better experience - the food has been excellent (I don't drink, so can't comment on the wine) (the chicken pesto is a personal favourite) and the service also.

Maybe CitiExpress is the way forward...

Oh, and given the queues that can form at the checkin at LHR T1 and T4, there is very little excuse not to use e-checkin... Even with luggage - Fast Bag Drop has always been very efficient in my experience (often with no queue at all - and, if you can't use e-checkin, just blunder up to Fast Bag Drop past the queue, and mumble something about failed OLCI - they'll usually just check you in anyway...)
