I have never had a flight where the food service was completely removed, indeed I have been on one flight to AUH where passengers were offloaded due a broader based nut allergy. As it happened both the main WTP and CW meals had almonds sprinkled over the chicken and pecans in the dessert and LHR was unable to replace all those courses before departure. So this seems to me to be an inexperienced IFL. Or you were flying between GLA and BHD!
Same experience for me last month in Club Europe, though the pax was in row 2 and didn't alert the crew until they tried to hand them a packet of nuts. Those of us in row 1 had already finished them by that point, but the rest of the cabin got a bag of crisps with the drinks instead, then the meal service was done as normal.
