Ah, tramping about in the muck!
Good fun, eh? Anyhow my odd-ball advice is to avoid the Lake District in the summer. There are hordes of other people tramping about. To me, the best time is when no tourists are about, and in fact there is no muck. That is because the muck is frozen in January and the tourists are all huddled by the fireplace. I did Bowness-on-Windermere one fine frozen January. Once I left the confines of this cute little village, I had the woods to myself.
