AA policy is not to through-check on separate tickets.

Without checking a bag on your AA flight, you should have no problem making your B6 flight -- provided that your AA flight arrives on or close to schedule. You would take an "All Terminals" AirTrain from T8 to T5; it's about a five-minute ride.
