Hmm... I'm not sure if I understand you correctly... he has a ticket HAM-LHR-SFO, I have a ticket DUS-LHR-SFO and we're both on the same flight LHR-SFO (both paid tickets). We both should checkin for the DUS/HAM-LHR segment only? Does this mean we have to pickup our luggage at LHR T1, bring it to T4 and checkin again for the second segment?
Besides, at the DUS/HAM checkin they're always checking our luggage through to the last segment.
