Here's my review for a rather disappointing stay from August.
Booking & Check In
Booked directly on hyatt.com on cash for a Standard King. During check in we were offered an upgrade to an Andaz Suite on the 2nd floor and asked if they had something higher. We were told we could pay for an upgrade to the Andaz View Suite on the top floor; they also quickly offered to show the room which we took them up on. The room was visually quite lovely and the views were spectacular. We were told it was a nicer room than the other suites and didn’t press the issue too much. When we went back downstairs it was a slightly annoying negotiation car-lot style, where the front-desk staff went back and forth to the “manager” in the back. We settled on a 200 Euro/night incremental charge for the room (we mainly agreed because we were worried about sleep quality on the 2nd floor near a major road).
Looking back, I wish I hadn’t agreed on the upgrade. It wasn’t clear to me this room was otherwise identical to other standard suites, and I should’ve just pushed for a higher floor standard king room.
Hotel & location
The hotel itself feels very contemporary and was well cleaned. The location isn’t super for the main touristy sights of the city, but it’s still a nice neighborhood and it’s not too far from the English Park which makes for a lovely walk downtown.
Room
I haven’t been to any other Andaz properties to compare it too, but it was definitely somewhere between the typical Centric and Park Hyatt in design and quality. I really liked the visual design system throughout the room and hotel. There were weird design choices though, and other more serious issues. An example of a weird design choice would be the open-bathroom (a large glass window between the bathroom and your bedroom, with blinds you can lower). Not a big deal, but I don’t love it.
The main frustration with our stay was poor sleep quality. For starters, the bed was exceptionally firm (I’m not sure how any side sleeper would use it), and perhaps I was super unlucky with who I spoke to, but they seemed bewildered by the request to have a topper added to make it softer. A related issue was temperature, they have the limited +/- 2 degree thermostats where you have to also turn on the fan every couple hours. We got them to work occasionally, but generally our room was fairly warm (think ~78f). The main support from the hotel was the suggestion to keep the windows open all day. Unfortunately that didn’t help, as it was hot without being windy during our time in Munich. In addition, the windows opened into support pillars, which blocked most of the potential drafting. Perhaps I should have demanded more from the hotel staff, but two different people checked and explained the thermostats to us, and additional assistance wasn’t offered.
Service
I hit on some of the service issues in the room section above, but there’s more. One silly issue is that the turndown service took away extras we had requested and didn’t replace them (e.g., extra pillows) so we had to re-request items each day. They also didn’t stock snacks in the minibar, which is a bummer since a neat feature was supposed to be free snacks in the minibar.
I realize staffing levels are tough right now, but we were bummed that room service was not offered for Globalist breakfast (even the much cheaper Grand Hyatt Berlin we came from the prior week offered this). In any case, the breakfast had some issues, and we didn’t bother after our first attempt. It’s understaffed, and you have to demand service to get any, and they got our orders wrong anyway (which is surprising since you check boxes on a paper menu to order). But by the time we were seated, were able to order, and received our food, the restaurant was shutting down.
The last service issue was that our bill was incorrect and required multiple contact attempts to get it fixed.
Conclusion
This was probably the most disappointing stay I’ve had at a Hyatt. To their credit, the manager reached out when I provided this feedback to their survey and gave me some points as an apology, but frankly, relative to the issues we encountered the quantity of points given felt stingy.
