InterContinental: how is the new luxury hotel that opens in Barcelona?

The hotel moratorium enacted seven years ago by the Barcelona city council restricts the opening of new properties. One of the exceptions is that one hotel takes the place of another, as has been the case with the new InterContinental Barcelona .

This hotel, located at the foot of the Montjuïc rock, will be located in the building that previously housed the Crowne Plaza Barcelona Fira Center .
Both due to the moratorium and the pandemic, it will be the first five stars to be inaugurated this year.
The Brume Robbins studio was commissioned to renew the aesthetics to give it a touch of modernity inspired by the design history of the city.

The idea is "to turn the global into the local in which it will be a perfect destination for everything the city has to offer."

The sea, the streets, the art and the architecture of the Catalan capital inspire the color palette, textures and materials of all the rooms, restaurants and common areas of the new hotel.
"Each piece of furniture, each lamp, even the rugs and works of art, are unique and made-to-measure pieces", Brume Robbins studio said.

For example, the mosaics on the floors feature vibrant patterns and lines that are reminiscent of different elements of the city.

While the use of many noble materials such as wood, marble or fabrics serve to redesign all spaces playing with different layers and visual textures that allow creating cozy spaces inspired by the different neighborhoods of Barcelona.

In the reception area, a large covered porch unfolds with elegant wooden consoles, small lights and a gallery of art niches in navy blue, to create a cozy atmosphere.

Inside, four individual wooden counters provide a personalized experience for guests.
Upon arrival, visitors can see a large seven meters high metal map of the city that surrounds the grand staircase, while Catalan ceramics fall in silhouette like a double-height screen between the restaurant and the café lounge.

How are the rooms at the InterContinental

The 273 rooms were decorated with ocher and neutral tones, terracotta, walnut, natural finishes and horizontal lines reminiscent of the Mediterranean, with details such as the hydraulic floors of the Catalan kitchens to the “panot” of the sidewalks of the streets of Barcelona.

The most spectacular is the Presidential Suite, 180 square meters. While the touch of modern luxury is given by the 17 Junior Suites.
The bars and restaurants of the new hotelThe hotel has three gastronomic spaces, which keep tribute to Catalan culture.

The Gebre ( frost, in Catalan) cocktail bar presents a gigantic display of bottles with translucent glass panels and polished metal to represent the essence of the earth in its coldest state.

Lighting hangs like carved ice cubes over white marble countertops, and residential leather touches add luxury and comfort. Guests can enjoy the classic cocktails, as well as a menu of signature preparations.
One of the dining rooms is Arrel ( roots) , where a gigantic aged wood screen with interlaced latticework of vegetal airs.

This space will be a tribute to traditional dishes, with local products in portions to share.

The other is Quirat , which will present a menu of dishes from different seasons prepared by Víctor Torres , one of the youngest chefs in Spain to win a Michelin star.

It is a space designed with gemstones and geological geometries in mind. The custom-textured metal and glass walls of the private dining room are the octagonal backdrop to inlaid floors and diamond-shaped chandeliers, and the heavy use of shiny materials makes guests feel as though. they would have entered a life-size geode.
