Flights are not on the same ticket, and there is an overnight stay in Sydney. Our domestic flights wouldn't have got us in to Sydney in time.
Coming home is no issue, as all flights are scheduled on the same day. I understand that international allowances will apply in this situation.
I have been advised that as long as I keep the weight of the bag at (or below) 23kgs in the flights to Sydney, that it should be OK? That the suitcase might be treated as a bulky item?
Kind of makes it confusing for people who need to fly in from regional areas to make an international flight.

The simple answer is you can't solve your problem by adding extra luggage. You've booked separate tickets and the allowance doesn't apply over the two different days. That being said I've never seen them be that picky about bag size more just weight when flying from regional ports.
