Also, I assume they simply refunded the difference between your I fare and the G fare? If you wanted a higher fare class (like Y), that ticket might actually cost more than your original I fare.

I hadn't thought about the non-refundable/refundable angle - I can see where they wouldn't want to make the ticket refundable. I bought the itinerary months ago where the I-class fare was a steal, so any fare difference would have been pretty small. The discount coupon that I got was for $75 each way as a courtesy rather than as a fare calculation. I am not saying that I am stomping my feet on this - I just thought it strange that they would downgrade and then pick a fare class near the very bottom.
