I understand the desire for the COS bonus but I wouldn't imagine that they would ever issue a refundable fare as a replacement or a non-refundable one, regardless of the cabin. Are there cases where this is untrue?

Also, I assume they simply refunded the difference between your I fare and the G fare? If you wanted a higher fare class (like Y), that ticket might actually cost more than your original I fare.
