I fit in all economy airline seats just fine, but with my 37-38" waist and my partner's waist size around 40", I can't see how we could even buckle the seatbelts. HA seatbelts are almost 2 feet longer!! Is United intentionally marketing itself as the skinny-traveler airline or something? Seems strange that they'd be such an outlier here.

I don't foresee you having any issues requesting an extender on United. I often ask for one on redeyes when I want to lay across a row of seats in a more comfortable fashion. They've never given me an issue even knowing I don't have a true "need" for one.
