This is not the first time we've heard something like this with Hertz. We had a customer who "rented" with Hertz at DEN about a month back. After the rental, they contacted us to say they never got a receipt for the rental. It turns out that either the car was never checked out or wasn't properly checked out because the customer was never billed and Hertz has no record of the rental ever occurring.
Basically, the customer (a Gold member) drove the vehicle off the lot, drove it around for 2+ days, and returned it and it was like the rental never existed. No idea how Hertz dealt with that at return, but we assume it just returned an error along the lines of "no open rental transaction" and they put the car back into inventory.
It was a free rental for the customer (or rather the customer's employer) but it definitely is concerning that this was even possible in the first place.
