We really liked the Westin Palace in Madrid. We got upgraded to a stunning 3 room suite. Some people have had not as nice rooms though. We loved Spain.

If you are planning on staying in a major city in the US, the W chain is interesting. Its modern ultra-chic approach is different. We stayed at the W Lakeshore in Chicago and enjoyed it. On weekends the place is crowded due to the popularity of the nightclub and lobby bar.
