Book your flight now, use points if possible. It's unlikely the flight will sell out; you only need one available seat in any fare category in order to add the companion. If you have enough points, you can book her a placeholder for now -- If you don't have enough points you can book her on a fully refundable fare. Then once the CP is active on January 6 (approximately) just add her CP booking to your itinerary, then cancel the points booking. If on the off chance that there aren't any seats available at that time, call and have the agent do the cancel/CP booking for you. If, on the very off chance that this isn't possible, you can cancel your points booking and receive a full refund of the points back into your account, or change your flight to another if there's one available with open seats. If you have to book a non-refundable flight for yourself, keep in mind that if you cancel you'll have travel funds good for one year from the date you make the booking.
