I think it's unlikely to be completely sold out, but an option is to book a ticket for your wife that you can replace with the CP ticket, on points if you have enough, or a refundable paid fare. When you cancel while the flight is sold out, availability may not immediately show and you may need an agent's assistance; maybe others can advise on that.
