The renewal fee will not be DUE before the 13th month anniversary of the account opening, but if you do pay the fee, and then cancel within 30 days of when the fee was billed, American Express will refund it. You wouldn't even need to ask.
mia,
Thank you for your answer.
OK, now I understand the "13 months". It avoids the 2nd year AF and your card can be cancelled. Probably this has been talked about in the past, doing it will affect future applications of Amex cards, won't it? I read at least one forum member has applied for Plat card for 3 times (this year) and received SUB for each card. But I don't think he is willing to keep all 3 cards in the years to come. I read Amex is warning against "gaming" of the system and penalizing those engage in such a thing. What is the likelihood of cancelling the card after the "13 months" be seen as gaming? I have 3 Amex cards now. The oldest one is Hilton (20 years or so), Biz Plat (5~6 years) and Biz Blue (4 years). I had Starwood card for one year and closed 16 years ago or so. When I log on to my Amex account (even today), a pop up for Biz Plat card pops up. I am tempted to apply. But I don't think I will be paying the 2nd AF when the due comes. Do you think I will face negative consequences if I apply for the 2nd Biz Plat now and jump ship before the 14th months comes?
