Regarding the responsibilty, I seem to recall a documentary about Cabin Crew training where a candidate nearly failed because she couldn't master the door. She got it in the end but I wonder is it as straighforward as we think?
I generally don't want exit row for other reasons so I don't need to worry too much about the responsibilty in the rare event of an emergency.
I have been out through one for real (albeit 30+ years ago on a DC9) and as I was sitting in the window, I had to open it. It really was very straightforward and logical.
