You were lucky. Border Force might be OK but as a whole it’s airlines that check a day 2 test is booked and on the PLF and you could be denied boarding.
Our documents were checked by both the border officials as well as BA. They are not likely to require a 2nd-day covid test for a passenger leaving the country the next day. At some point, logic prevails. We were five people, all traveling separately, and no questions were raised in any of the five instances.
