Speaking from my experience, I was not allowed to check my luggage through when on an overnight transfer: had to collect my bag in Heathrow and then check it in the next day. I don't know if they were actual rules or BA outpost agent simply didn't know how to do that and choose the path of least resistance (I got a BP for my next flight though).
