The refit of the existing 737-800s to BYOD (no screens) is complete, and the 737-MAX8s were delivered without screens. All IFE is done through a local wifi network to your own device, and seatback device holders are installed in the back of each seat where the screens were.
Expanding on this, the only IFE you will find (other than streaming wifi) in the AA narrowbody fleet is a handful of Airbus 319's and 321's (including all of the subfleet of A321T transcon planes). You won't know if you have it until you board the plane. This website does a pretty good job of staying up to date on which planes still have the screens (AVOD) and which one have been converted to BYOD.
