Your other option is to book yourself on Air Malta. EC261/2004 regulation states it's your choice of refund or rebooking (same dates or later), so if you want/need to go to Malta you do so. After the trip you claim from BA a price of your KM ticket - BA will of course refuse, because it's not their policy. Equipped with their 1) initial refusal to re-route you on KM or LH due to inflexible policy 2) then refusal to refund your KM ticket, you go to CEDR, who is very likely to rule in your favour and make BA pay up.
The reason BA keeps their inflexible policies in place is that people can't be bothered to go to CEDR/MCOL to enforce the EC261/2004 regulation.
