Bob, belated thank you for the extra detail. I did read it and forgot to reply. Back from SOU-PMI myself now. Like others I found Southampton's small size very convenient. The car park is barely a minute away from the check in desks and a minute or two after dropping bags we were in the small but smart lounge. Morning options include bacon rolls but we just missed this and had one each of the cheese and ham platters.
Coming back passing border control is obviously much quicker than risking some of the recent queues at Heathrow.
Two thoughts that may help others. The M27 is closed at weekends quite a lot at the moment (and is 50mph for many miles even when open) so check before you travel and allow extra time if needed. Second, the station is also only about a one minute walk from the terminal but connections to Sussex coast services are not always ideal as I found out on Sunday coming back from Glasgow (Loganair code share).
