I should add for clarity that there is one instance where a non Elite could use a companion certificate and get an instant upgrade into F. It would require someone "gifting" two GGUs. Gold Guest Upgrade certificates earned for reaching MVPG can be gifted to anyone and used for immediate upgrades into F if at least 2U are available on the flight, one for each passenger. The GGUs would upgrade all segments in an itinerary providing there is 2U on each segment and the connection time is 4 hours or less.

If there are multiple segments but not all of them have 2U available, you would be upgraded on the segments that do have 2U availability, even if discontiguous. Should 2U open on the other segment(s) prior to departure, you could call in to AS and be upgraded on that/those segment(s) based on the strength of the already applied GGUs.
