Flight sold out in BC: How to benefit both self and BA?

Some family are flying on the last LHR-HKG flight next weekend in paid albeit deeply-discounted BC. In the past 24 hours, J and F inventory buckets have gone from 2 seats each to sold out. Premium inventory for all but one of the other BA, CX and even QF flights earlier that day and even for the next day are just 1 or 2 BC or FC seats at most. Economy is wide open on just about all flights.

While seats may free up in the next week, I wonder what's the best way to approach BA for a bump compensation in the event BC on their flight is indeed oversold? They should be checking in some 5-6 hours before flight departure and would have OLCIed. The're not interested in a downgrade unless the compensation was really really good.

FWIW, they flew around the same time last year during the rugby thing and asked for and got an at-gate opup to FC.
