You can check through from AS to AA on separate tickets. My wife and I did it in late August. PDX-SEA on a separate AS ticket and SEA-LHR on AA. You need to be checked in on the AA app and then the AS agent can see the reservation.

BTW we flew on AA in business and the service was very disappointing.
