I noticed this with my last BA flight to, that I was pre-allocated a seat before 48 hours to departure and there were no alternatives.
I've had this as well in the past - very frustrating. You purchase a ticket type where free seat selection at online check-in is listed as a benefit and then go to check in exactly at T-24 and find that everyone has been auto allocated a seat and consequently there isn't anywhere else to select. I had hoped this was something that didn't happen very often but from your story it seems more common than I'd thought. How often does this happen?
