If I don't need a booked flight and want to book an alternative, rather than canceling & booking, I just change the flight to what I want. It will be an add-collect, refund of difference to your wallet, or a swap if the price is the same. All the information is already in the PNR & your record locator will remain the same. I changed my LAX-SEA flight for tomorrow to JFK-SEA-PHX two weeks later. I found a great AA award, LIR-MIA-LAX//LAX-JFK in J for 27.5K. Flagship J MIA-LAX & Flagship J LAX-JFK on the A321T, which I have never flown, six days later.

Yes, I've done that as well. In fact, the day that my Wallet wasn't working I was trying to make a change to a trip, but the new fare was more than the original fare and I couldn't access funds my wallet from my other cancelled trip (the two "trips" were actually part of one trip but were in different PNRs due to the fact that there are different passengers on different portions of the trip).
For what it's worth, my wallet worked fine several hours later; it seems that it was just a temporary bug.
