Should the OP suck up the outbound cost - absolutely.

Should they automatically lose the return as well - absolutely not.

My final 2c on this as I think until the OP has further contact/responses, this will just be speculation from us that is already going in circles.
BA would have to restructure their fares if forced to amend the rule. That I imagine will lead to everyoe having to pay more for their ticket. Would you be happy with that?
