Should the OP suck up the outbound cost - absolutely.

Should they automatically lose the return as well - absolutely not.

My final 2c on this as I think until the OP has further contact/responses, this will just be speculation from us that is already going in circles.
Not to belabor the point, but if you use this argument, the OP would likely be out of pocket even more if he bought one-way F tickets outbound as these would almost certainly be cheaper than buying new round-trips altogether.
