A Mifi hotspot is pretty much the same thing, the difference is that you own the hardware (and can take it to wherever you want)... you just need to insert a SIM. When things get better, I was thinking of doing the same (although I've had good luck connecting up to three devices to my phone which is sufficient for my needs).
