An interesting point - I remember reading that article. Maybe their "diversification of service levels" genuinely include "elite status members seeking upgrades." Or perhaps the AA is too cheap with IT to monetize it differently.
Is there any evidence that UA or DL actually makes more $$$ due to their more aggressive premium cabin upsales? Or is this purely FlyerTalk conjecture? I remember an article (somewhere?) discussing that from a trustworthy source, but cannot recall when, where, or what exactly...
