In the past, it was never a problem (USA passport) to do OLCI for international flights and get boarding passes without the DOCS OK notation. One could pass through TSA airport security (departing USA, assuming no bags to check) and verify passport, visa, etc. requirements at the SC or gate and get new boarding passes with DOCS OK printed at that time. In most cases, the GA checked travel documents again at the gate before boarding. IME it was sometimes especially useful to be able to do OLCI, get boarding passes, and then sometimes do the document verification after the first domestic connecting flight, at the international gateway, although I realize that this should not have worked and the GA boarding the domestic connecting flight should have checked my travel documents before permitting me to board that flight. In later cases of the same situation, there would be a printed warning on all (not just for the international TATL/TPAC segment) OLCI boarding passes for some DL agent to check travel documents before permitting me to board the first flight.
