I renewed my passport via mail last year (this was done at the LA Consulate). I wasn't issued a MR (machine readable) passport ... and the passport clearly states as such. This isn't a big problem per se, I've travelled extensively without any hassles.

I recall reading that the US is now requiring that all passports be MR. Can somebody confirm/deny this?
