My experience is limited to Skis, but Ive never had an issue and BA allow 'sports items' as part of your standard allowance.

For winter/sports holidays BA often comes out far ahead of the LCC's on price given the fees they charge for each set of skis and more again for a separate boot bag. BA count the ski bag + boots as one piece.
