I hear you. Ms. VRFAST usually asks me to fetch stuff in the OH if needed, since I'm the "tallest" one in the family. We usually remove the stuff from carry-on before boarding, or put the carry-on bag in the OH, then get stuff after people have boarded. Lately when in F, we've been putting our carry-on under the seat in front of us...You're welcome FT peeps....
As for the OP, you didn't do anything wrong. I too blame the airline for the crappy OH space for people in row 1, and bulk heads in general I guess.
