The AA rumor is checking your carryon free at the ticketing before security, but I’d prefer checking our carryons at the gate VALET style or at ticketing, and you pick them up planeside.

I know that I often travel with just a carry on and no checked bag, but I totally agree with this. Carry on should have a charge as the placement and removal of carry ons slows down the schedule. First checked bag should be free. Then people, especially leisure travelers who fly less frequently would be encouraged to send their bags elsewhere and not have the on board crisis of placement. Perhaps status could make carry ons free and then I get my carry on but the lady who can’t figure out that if the bin is closed, it is full, checks her bag.
