It could be an inventory mismatch (quote the cash price in one fare class and the points price in another). It looks like there are some decent "Recommended Fares" and "Insider Fares" on AA in the DEN-JFK market.
As an aside: I wish that a credit card company would strike a deal with an airline for a better deal than ~1.0 cpp for credit card points. I guess there's no reason to do that when you have transfers to frequent flyer programs.
