While they did recently purchase 29 used 739's, that's fairly minor compared to the neo order. Secondhand MD90's have been retired and the B717's are slated to be retired in a few years (the fleet was down to 53 aircraft as of the end of June).
With the new Delta marketing advertising a new plane when booking a flight, “Flagship narrow body”, just like the premium charge that Delta had when the A350 with the “Flagship D1 suites” rolled out. Wouldn’t surprise me that Delta sneaks in a added fee when flying the “new flagship narrow body” fleet.
