I'd just like to thank everyone for their contributions to this thread. I was considering using Turo to rent a car to drive from Chicago to Asheville and back in November [the answer to the question "When would it be cheaper to use Turo than a rental car company?" is "When you're looking to rent a hybrid"], but having read the stories in this thread, I'm sticking with my Hertz rental.
