Hi, ffay005, thanks for your reply. I have US green card so entry to the US isn't a concern. I am more concerned about the connection time and potentially missing the flight to the US. I have AA executive platinum status, so I need to stick with either Finnair or British Airways. The other option with BA requires a 10 hour overnight layover in LHR which is not ideal either. if you can enter UK on overnight layover (I think you can in transit - pls check) but can not schengen I would definitely fly BA
being stuck in HEL (ha!) transit for 24 hr sounds miserable, possibly no open lounge plus iirc LAX flights are not even daily so you'd have route via ord or nyc..
Ba may have 788 to moscow vs regional jet of ay subsidiary, you ll have access to fancy lhr lounge as ow emerald
Perhaps doing hel in the other direction is more practical.
