It is very nice when the hotel staff takes the opportunity to look at the status and night count of the guest properly rather than just mumble the usual "thank you for being a.... elite"

The generosity of the hotel extends beyond the first night, you are not entitled to the platinum benefits until the stay has actually posted to your account. So even nicer of them.
