Yup, I have to do the exact same thing for work sometimes. We have equipment that's in pelicans, and we can't check it, it must be hand carried due to the sensitivity of the contents. We buy a second seat, and most importantly we make sure the gate agent understands they can't release the seat.
I have also seen people with things like Cellos do the same dance.
