I had a bill of 315 euros (370 USD). At checkout, I attempted to pay with two 200 USD Marriott gift cards. It's August in Rome, so staffing was light. No one was around who knew what a gift card was. "Take a photocopy," I said. "Bill the gift cards when you can. I have a train to catch."
A week later, I check the gift card balance. They have each been zeroed out.
This happened to me, but I had a different outcome than you. First time it’s ever happened though.
I had a $555 gift card and a $236 balance to pay. Luckily, I paid my bill a few hours before check out. I got a call from the hotel about 30 mins after I paid. (Actually, they called 3 times before finally leaving a voice mail.) They asked me to come by the front desk and pick up a new gift card for $319.
