I believe that this was also the case in Marriott Rewards, but can't remember for sure.

Pre-merger Marriott Rewards did not count or track elite years. Lifetime status was based only on lifetime points and lifetime nights. That's a big part of why the Bonvoy year tracker is such a mess, they had to go back to recreate a couple of decades worth of data.
