Isn't the whole point of earning airline status to use it?

I'm not terribly excited by the prospect of boarding group 52 and no upgrade chances on another airline for a couple months at the end of the year, especially around the holidays when the airports are crowded with once a year flyers. And to what end? Maybe earning the lowest tier?
