This is the way. Once I even flew MSP-PSP on a Friday (after a full day's work) and Ubered to the desolate Palm Springs station to catch it around midnight. It's not nearly as good (or sane) of an idea as originating in LA, though. One can fly DFW-LAX mid-afternoon, take the FlyAway bus nonstop to Union Station ($9.75), enjoy a dinner at nearby Olvera Street or even at TRAXX at the station, and enjoy the Metropolitan Lounge before getting cozily settled in the roomette and departing at 10.
