The test is perfectly doable on just a smartphone (visit the eMed website on your mobile browser). I did both my pre-departure and return tests on my iPhone XS and I had no issues.

It’s helpful to have a phone stand as you have to show the agent what you are doing, and will want to have 2 hands free. Some of the agents are very insistent about being able to see 100% of what you’re doing.
